Prep, Grade 1 and 2 students are very excited about learning Mandarin Chinese this term They have been learning to use gestures while counting. They enjoyed participating in language games where they had to read the numbers in Chinese characters.

Grade 5 & 6s are learning words related to the topic of 'Positive Personality traits'. They practised using adjectives to describe someone, such as 感恩的 (grateful), 投入的 (engaged). They focused on what kind of positive personality traits other people have. They also learnt to change a noun to an adjective. The students really enjoyed learning these words and the activities involved.
Grade 3 & 4s have been learning to describe ones abilities and preferences. They learnt to describe what someone can and loves to do. They have finished making a mini book where they had to fill in the missing word in a sentence. They enjoyed reading the mini books and sharing with other classmates.
Grade 6 students learnt to use paint brushes to write Chinese characters on rice paper. They learnt how to hold the paint brushes and where to position the writing. Here is the photo of them practising in class.
This week, the Grade 3 - 6 students learnt the expression 'mǎmǎ hūhū', which means 'average/okay'. There is a story behind this expression as to why it literally means 'horse horse tiger tiger'. The students watched the story on an animated video as below. They also learnt how to write these two Chinese characters; 马 (horse) and 虎 (tiger).
Students were looking refreshed and ready for the new Term. This week, Grade 3 & 4 students learnt to use the measure word 'Zhi' to count animals. They enjoyed singing this song 'The Ten Little Dinosaurs' while practising counting.
Grade 5 & 6 students have started learning to read Chinese characters that are symmetrical, such as 十, 中,草,田. They learnt to fold a piece of square paper in half, draw half of the character, cut and unfold the paper to view the whole character. They then used the cutouts to make a poster.
The Grade 3 and 4 students have learnt about the Chinese Zodiac animal signs. They listened to the Zodiac story and practised reading the words through various language games. The Grade 5 & 6 students are very interested in learning about China. Through various reading activities, they learnt facts such as how long the Great Wall of China is and what the Chinese flag represents.
We had a lot of fun celebrating Chinese New Year on 26 February. Mr Wang from Cultural Infusions came to TPPS and had Music workshops with the students. He showed the students different kinds of Chinese musical instruments and told them stories related to the music. Some students also had a turn to play the drums and cymbals to accompany Mr Wang when he was playing the bamboo flute.
Prep - 2 students also made a dog puppet each and Grade 3 - 6 students made a Jianzi (Kikbo) to celebrate the day. This year Grade 3 – 6 students are learning Chinese during Terms 1 & 2, followed by the Prep - 2 students during Terms 3 & 4.
There will be a whole school event on Monday, 26 February to celebrate Chinese New Year. Students will participate in a Chinese music performance/workshop and they will also take part in craft activities to learn about the significance of the celebration. As there will be three music performances/workshops for different year levels, please check the times below. If any parents would like to join us, they are more than welcome to do so. Times for the performances are: Prep - 2 9:00 – 9:45 am Grade 3 & 4 9:55 – 10:40 am Grade 5 & 6 11:10 – 12:00 midday Details of the event has been published on your Compass newsfeed. Please note that the payment and parental consent need to be finalised by 19 February. Students are encouraged to wear red on the day as it is a symbolic colour for Chinese New Year. The Grade 1 & 2 students have been studying the book 'The Hungry Caterpillar' in Chinese. They played a speaking game 'Roll, Say and Colour' to describe the life cycle of a butterfly. They took turns to roll a die, say and colour in the corresponding pictures. The first person coloured in all the pictures is the winner of the game.
